Selwyn Centres

Friendship, help and support for the older person

The Selwyn Parish Partnership programme operates community day centres throughout Greater Auckland and Whangarei for older people who may be lonely or isolated and in need of help and support. Hosted from parish buildings in association with Anglican churches, the centres are part-funded by The Selwyn Foundation and provide invaluable social interaction and - in some cases, respite services for carers - to a weekly total of 400 elderly people. Anyone for Scrabble? Guests at the Papakura Selwyn Centre

The cost of attending a Selwyn Centre is between $2 - $3 per session and, if a meal is provided, it is charged at cost for $6 or less. Transport can be arranged to and from each centre for a small donation. All centres have a time of gentle exercises, morning tea and social games and interaction. Times are, approx, from 9.30 am to midday.

For older people, especially those isolated and/or living on their own, the Selwyn Centres provide a chance to get out and socialise.  For caregivers, especially those providing care to those with mild dementia, this is a chance for a break (note: the Centres are not suitable for people with advanced dementia).

A gerontologist nurse is based at the Papakura Selwyn Centre and is also available for any concerns or queries that guests and coordinators at Selwyn Centres in the Counties Manakau DHB area may have concerning health, access to services or resources.

It is intended that the Parish Partnership programme will continue to grow, bringing much needed support, friendship and hope to ever greater numbers of older people within our communities.

If you would like to enrol a loved one or if you would like to attend yourself, please contact the coordinator of the centre nearest you under contacts
