New respite service available at Tuakau Selwyn Centre

Date: 10 September 2010

The popular Selwyn Centre at St John’s Anglican Church in Tuakau is expanding, with a new respite service to be offered on Mondays from 20th September 2010.

The Centre currently operates on Tuesday mornings (9.30am -11.45am), providing a fun programme of social activities, outings, friendship and support for the over 65s. The new Monday service, however, will cater particularly for guests who may be more frail, and will extend from 9.00am – 2.00pm to give extra time of respite for families and carers.

In addition to the usual activity programme, Mondays will offer some practical, individualised activities, with morning tea and a cooked two-course lunch all provided at minimal cost ($10). As per the Tuesday sessions, transport will be available (for a small donation).

Judy Skinner, coordinator of the Tuakau Selwyn Centre, believes that the new respite session will be an invaluable service for the local community, allowing carers some much needed time off to rest, catch up with household chores or indulge in leisure pursuits.

I’m sure our new service will be greatly appreciated by spouses and those caring for older family members who have become very frail and increasingly reliant. There is a real need for respite services in the area and, whilst we shall only be able to accommodate five guests initially, I hope that we can welcome more people in the future, as our service develops.”

All are welcome to the new Monday sessions, but booking is required in advance. Further information is available from Judy Skinner, on 09 233 4303 or 021 555 002, email: jskin@xtra.co.nz.

The Tuakau Selwyn Centre is funded by The Selwyn Foundation, one of New Zealand’s largest charitable providers of services to older people, and is also supported by Counties Manukau District Health Board. Other Selwyn Centres available in the Franklin area are in Pukekohe and Waiuku. See www.selwyncare.org.nz for further details.
