The Selwyn Foundation named overall winner of the 2010 New Zealand ‘Excellence in Care’ Awards

Date: 21 October 2010

The Selwyn Foundation has been named supreme winner of the annual INsite/NZACA ‘Excellence in Care’ Awards, which were held recently during the New Zealand Aged Care Association’s national conference.

Not only did the Foundation win the specific ‘Innovative Delivery’ category for the introduction of its ‘At Home at Selwyn’ new model of care, but it also received the ‘Overall Excellence in Aged Care’ award (granted to the organisation that demonstrated an outstanding commitment to achieving excellence in aged care across all four award categories*).

The ‘At Home at Selwyn’ model of care was initially trialled during 2008/09 at Gracedale Home and Hospital, Mt Roskill, Auckland, which is managed under contract by the Foundation. The model focuses on a more personalised approach to the care of the individual, on the creation of an environment that promotes residents’ independence, and on families and staff actively working together to develop a partnership in the provision of care.

The trial proved to be highly successful and resulted in enhanced satisfaction rates amongst residents, their families and Gracedale staff in terms of the quality of care and the creation of a sense of ‘being at home’.

“It's about treating people with respect and creating opportunities where they can grow as a person - staff and residents alike,” says Hilda Johnson-Bogaerts, The Selwyn Foundation’s General Manager of Residential Care Services, who led the project team that developed and trialled the new model of care.

Charmain Diver, Manager of Gracedale Home and Hospital, undertook the training and education of her staff on the key aspects of the ‘At Home at Selwyn’ approach. Commenting on the success of the pilot, she says: “Not only did we have innovative ideas, but we were also able to measure the impact of the change, to show how we were helping our residents achieve a better quality of life. We have been amazed at the results.

“I should particularly like to thank all our dedicated staff at Gracedale, who fully embraced the principles of the new model and implemented them so enthusiastically, to make a real difference to the lives of those whom we care for.’

The ‘At Home at Selwyn’ model, which is an expression of The Selwyn Foundation’s four cornerstones of Faith, Care, Wellness and Independence, will now be implemented at all of the organisation’s care facilities throughout the country over the next year.
