New Selwyn Centre for older people opens in Glenfield

Date: 18 November 2011

Calling all over-65s and those who would like to make a difference by volunteering their services! Older people in Glenfield now have the chance to meet others and socialise in the friendly, caring environment of a Selwyn Centre.

The new Centre started on 31 October in the Main Hall of the St Barnabas Anglican Church, 470 Glenfield Road, Glenfield, and is open every Monday morning from 9.30 am to 12 noon.  It offers a programme of social games, gentle exercise, morning tea and special activities for $3.00 per guest.  Ample parking is provided and transport can be arranged for $3.00 per guest, if required.

Part-funded by The Selwyn Foundation, one of New Zealand’s largest charitable providers of quality aged care services, the Centre is for older adults who live alone or who may be in need of friendship, help and support, or for carers to have a few hours of respite, regardless of the religious or cultural background.  Activities are run by a trained coordinator and a team of volunteers, who can also play an advocacy role and liaise with other service agencies on behalf of the guests attending.

More than 600 people over the age of 65 with varying levels of independence and mobility now attend one of 27 Selwyn Centres each week throughout Greater Auckland, Thames and Whangarei, with more Centres due to open.  Loneliness can be a serious health issue for older people, and research indicates that social interaction with others directly influences general health. It can also bring psychological benefits, such as delaying the onset of dementia.

You can help to reduce isolation and support older people in your community by volunteering to transport guests to and from the Centre.  Guests will make a small contribution to petrol.

For further details on becoming a guest or volunteer at the Glenfield Selwyn Centre, please contact Shireen Tresslor (Coordinator), Tel: 443 7212 / 021 052 4044 (mobile); Email: shireen.tresslor@hwrcounselling.co.nz.
