Exciting times at Selwyn Heights!

New friends
Monday, 13 February 2012

One of the first things you notice when you come back to work after the holidays is how many new friends we’ve made in the last year. At Selwyn Heights, over 40 new people have come to live at the Village since we opened the Gilberd Apartments in October.

And we have new people moving in every day!

On Sunday, we had another one of our popular Open Days. These are a great opportunity to come and see the Village at a relaxed time of day, when our community is busy playing cards, having a cup of coffee in our new café, or enjoying a game of pool or bowls. The sun shines in through the windows, and there are lots of new faces about.

Everyone is curious, everyone is interested in the other people milling around. We have people who have been living here for ten years or more, who are just getting used to the sparkling new entertainment centre and finding the Village a completely fresh experience. And we have people who have just joined us, a little shy perhaps, but enough of them to not feel like they are the only ones who are the ‘new kids on the block’!

We still have a few very pretty apartments left in the new building. They come completely finished with all new whiteware included in the price, so you don’t have to do any more organising than to move your furniture in. That means you can devote your time to meeting new people and discovering all the fun things you can try your hand at here at Selwyn Heights.

Please give me a call if you think the time is right to be in a new place with lots of new friends around you.

A delicate balance
Friday, 23 Dec 2011

Christmas is the one time of year when we manage to get the entire family together, all in the same place, at the same time. There are no excuses; no one can be late home from work, no one can be playing sport that day, no one can have planned to do something else and committed to it months earlier. As a result, there are no stressed people - with the exception, maybe, of the cook!  Everyone arrives knowing that being with family is what Christmas is all about.

Present giving is one of the nicest things about Christmas. It’s not so much the receiving, but the giving, that puts people in the right frame of mind. Buying a present takes time, and more than a little thought, and most of us try hard to get the right present for the right person. When the time comes to hand the present over, we’re sometimes a little anxious, but usually everyone is smiling and it’s a pleasurable moment. Present giving is really a communication between one person and another, and it further elevates a family occasion above being just an ordinary day.

Perhaps the one thing we could learn to do without is the over-eating on Christmas Day! Getting around the table with family is always a memorable experience, but the end result of all that turkey and ham and Christmas pudding is usually a feeling of complete exhaustion.

Christmas Day is such a delicate balance - getting such a large number of people together, putting them in the right frame of mind, the pleasure of gift giving and receiving, and the inevitable feast that puts us to sleep so soundly for the rest of the day!

We are so thankful when we can put aside our stressful lives, spend time with the people we love, and actually get to devote a few hours to being relaxed and kind to each other. It’s important to recognise what a luxury it can be.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas from everyone at Selwyn Heights.

New beginnings
Friday, 16 Dec 2011

We’re accustomed to thinking of Christmas as being something that we celebrate at the very end of the year, but of course, from the Christian point of view, it really celebrates a new beginning: the birth of Christ.

Beginnings are something we can look for, and find, at almost any time in our year. September, and Spring, is a new beginning for nature. April, and - for the Government - July, are new beginnings for the financial year.

On the other hand, we think of the end of the year as being something where we draw things to a close. We “finish up” at work, or ‘wind up” our club activities for the year, or “wind down” before the holidays begin. And, of course, the idea of finishing things and taking a break after a long year is a good idea. But every time we finish something, we should be looking at starting something new. This is what rejuvenates us, makes us feel we are still achieving and meeting challenges, and it is the essence of life.

Next year will be a very big year for us at Selwyn Heights. We have a number of new residents who are enjoying the new beginning of joining our community here, and will settle down to a more ordered life once the Christmas mayhem is over. We also have two new apartment buildings in progress, so there'll be plenty of fresh challenges ahead of us, and many new things to look forward to.

Over the next few weeks, while you are taking time out and enjoying a rest, please feel free to come and visit us and think about your new beginnings for 2012. Selwyn Heights is a community where we very much have an eye on the future. We welcome you to come and share your future with us too.

What is ‘independence’?
Thursday, 8 Dec 2011

This Sunday, we're having another Open Day. It's a chance for you to rethink the idea of staying independent and what it means to do so.

Independence means different things at different stages in our lives. To a 20 year old, independence means freedom from parents. To a 40 year old, independence means freedom from the worry of money. Later in our lives, independence means the freedom to make our own decisions, without having to worry too much about the effect that our decisions make on the lives of other people.

Henry Ford, a man who knew both failure and success, once said: “If money is your hope for independence, you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience and ability.”

As we grow older, it becomes more and more obvious that money will not be the answer to our problems, although it can certainly assist. What we come to value more is what we have learned, our judgment and the skills we can demonstrate and pass on to the next generation.

What often eventuates, though, is that we become shut away from the rest of the world. We see our workmates less, our friends infrequently and our family only sparingly. And never more so than at this particular time of year, the Christmas holidays, when the world disappears to the beach: sometimes for weeks at a time.

They key to staying independent is not the ability to withstand long hours of loneliness. The key is to maintain your social contacts and keep the energy alive and your contributions valued. That's why the concept of a ‘retirement village’ exists. It's a place where people come together to strengthen their relationships, keep their minds active and share in the problem-solving together.

The community pools its resources to provide services like a café, a library and cinema, or a bowling green. But the real resources that are brought together are the experiences and complimentary skills of the village residents. That’s why a village like Selwyn Heights works so well as a concept, and why so many people are using the village as a springboard for new experiences, knowledge and skills.

This Sunday’s Open Day runs from 10 am – 3 pm. There will be tours of the Village and new apartments, and the full range of activities the Village offers will be open to view. Come and have a chat and see how you can join the community.

Get in early and miss the rush!
Thursday, 1 Dec 2011

The village is looking very festive with all our Christmas decorations up, and everyone’s busy getting the gift shopping done before the Christmas rush really begins. Those of us who plan ahead miss all the panic buying, pick up a few bargains along the way, and can settle down and enjoy the Christmas parties, without worrying about whose present we’ve forgotten!

The same rule applies to planning your move to Selwyn Heights. 2012 is not far away now, and if you’ve been promising yourself a fresh start and a brand new apartment, then now is a very good time to visit us and review the beautiful new two-bedroom living options. Who knows what next year might bring - perhaps a lift in the economy, or maybe more belt-tightening and cutbacks from the government? Do the sums and you might find downsizing from your old home and moving into an energy-efficient apartment will save you money!

You can make savings by simply not having to buy new appliances when you move into your new apartment: they’re already provided and included in the price. A cost-efficient heat pump will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. You can eat your main meal at lunchtime in the café, watch a movie in our 26-seat cinema, and enjoy a drink at the bar in the evening with friends, all for much less than it would cost you if you went outside the Village for your entertainment. Living is very easy at Selwyn Heights!

Visit us now and start planning your move next year. The early bird not only gets the worm, he also has a better choice than the late bird! We’ve some wonderful apartment choices still available, but they’re selling fast. We’d be very happy to show you around and introduce you to everyone at Selwyn Heights.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

Only nine apartments left
Monday, 21 Nov 2011

We’re getting a lot of calls from people who are worried that the apartments are selling so fast they might miss out!  The short answer is - yes, if you're keen to move in soon, you need to be talking to us right away. There are some very good two-bedroom apartments left, in a range of configurations (not all apartments are the same). There are also some very good apartments available, slightly cheaper, at the McElroy building, which is right next door to the new Gilberd building and Macdonald entertainment centre.

All apartments feature an oven, dishdrawer, fridge, washing machine, dryer and heat pump at no extra cost, which shows what terrific value they are. You don’t need to go out and buy lots of new appliances. You also get a secure carpark included in the price, which is in the basement and comes with a storage area as well.

Prices start at $445,000 for Gilberd apartments. Talk to us about the McElroy apartments, because we’re really quite negotiable.

We’re having another Open Day on Sunday, 11 December, from 10.00 am – 3.00 pm, but if you want the best choice of apartments, I'd recommend you contact us quickly and ask to be shown through each one. There are some with terrific views and you won’t know which one suits you best until you see it!  Call us today for a personal tour.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Enjoying life to its fullest
Monday, 14 Nov 2011

Christmas is just a few weeks' away: the shops are already full of merchandise and the decorations are starting to go up around Auckland. Whilst it’s a wonderful time of year - a time to count our blessings and take stock - it’s also a very demanding period, and we all know the feeling of utter exhaustion when it’s over!

It’s a great idea to be enjoying life to the fullest, but to do so requires an enormous amount of energy. All around Selwyn Heights, we see people taking walks, bike riding and generally staying in shape. It’s easy to do, because we have so many ways of keeping fit. The beautiful Monte Cecilia Park is right on our doorstep, and One Tree Hill is only a minute away by car. Outdoor bowls is a great way to keep those muscles stretching and toned. And, in our Wellness Centre, you can book in for a massage, or enjoy a good muscle-relaxing soak in our hydrotherapy spa.

This means you can approach Christmas with a positive regime to keep the energy levels up. You can also stop off at the Wellness Centre for a hair appointment or spa treatment, all at very reasonable prices.

Christmas at Selwyn Heights also promises to be our best yet. We have our new baby grand piano in the atrium of the Macdonald Centre, and this has become a focal centre for our weekly sing-a-longs. Happy Hour at the bar on Fridays has become a regular institution, where everyone catches up and laughter can be heard throughout the Village. We're working on a big Christmas party to welcome all our new residents too.

It’s not too late for you to join in the festive fun. There are just nine apartments left in the new Gilberd building, and a good choice of sun, views and apartment layouts. It’s your chance to put some excitement back into your Christmas celebrations!  Live life to its fullest - call us today and we can show you around.

Feeling at home
Wednesday, 9 Nov 2011

How do you know for certain that a move to Selwyn Heights will be the right move for you? One of the best ways of getting a feel for the Village is to visit again and again, and just sit in a quiet corner and let it all sink in.

Here are some suggestions of things you can do to make yourself feel more at home, before you make your decision.

First of all, our café is open to the public every day from 10 am –3 pm. You can come in for a cup of coffee (incognito if you wish!), and quietly watch the world go by, whilst getting a feel for the place. Bring a friend along, too, and get their reaction. You can even have a hot midday meal at the café and sample the glorious food.

You're also welcome to book yourself into the Wellness Centre for a hair appointment or spa treatment. Our prices are very competitive, and Priscilla will make you feel very relaxed and at home. Bookings for the Wellness Centre are essential, but you're always welcome to pop your head in the door and have a chat and a look around.

Most times you visit, there'll be someone on hand to take you through an apartment or two, if you’d like to have another look or show a friend. If you let us know you're coming, we can make sure there's someone on hand to give you a personal tour. But you're also welcome to just turn up, as there's usually someone available, if only for a few minutes. Reception is in the atrium of the Macdonald Centre. Feel free to come over for a chat at any time.

You can see how easy it is to get to know us, and think about your move by experiencing the Village first hand.  We love to see visitors and make new friends, but we're happy to leave you to make your own, unhurried decisions and absorb the atmosphere of the Village at your own pace.

We hope to see you soon.

Open to view (for miles)
Wednesday, 2 November 2011

This Saturday, we're having another Open Day from 10am - 3pm. You’ll be able to walk through not only the entertainment centre, including the café, Wellness Centre, cinema, library and bar, but also compare the apartments upstairs to find one that best suits you.

One of the great surprises for everyone who sees our apartments for the first time is how many of them have terrific views. If your apartment faces North, you can see One Tree Hill - so beautifully framed you would have thought we placed the building there just to look at it! If your apartment faces South, you can look out over the Manukau Harbour and as far as the Bombay Hills on a clear day. It's an inspiring view, and you could sit all day on your balcony and happily never leave your apartment!

Of course, if you did that, you would never meet the wonderful people at Selwyn Heights. If you visit our Open Day on Saturday, you can do just that, because many of the residents will be demonstrating the sorts of activities available at the Village. It’s good of them to do this, because many of them are very busy people. The new entertainment centre has been such a success since it opened a few weeks ago that it's become a real hive of activity. So, despite the busy lives our residents have - visiting their families, doing volunteer work, or travelling the world - they've found the new Macdonald entertainment centre a wonderful amentity.

Our Sales Manager, Mark, will be giving a very useful half-hour seminar at 10.30 am and then again at 1.30 pm on Saturday. Moving out of your old home and into a new home is a full-scale operation and you'll have plenty of questions to ask him. Mark loves getting involved, so you're welcome to quiz him on Saturday, or any other time.

We'll have the barbeque fired up all day on Saturday, so drop in and bring all the family. At the Wellnesss Centre, you can have a free hand massage, or join the boys for a game of snooker in the ballroom on one of our two full-sized tables. There’s plenty of things to see and do, so we hope you'll make the most of the opportunity and stay a while!

See you on Saturday!

Getting to know us
Monday, 24 October 2011

Last Wednesday, we hosted a cocktail party for the residents of Selwyn Heights and invited along a large number of people from our Open Day. Over 90 people attended!

When you’re choosing a retirement village, getting the chemistry right between you and your neighbours is very important. Will you make new friends? Will you find people with similar interests to yours? Do they have a sense of humour, are they open to new ideas and do they have the same values as you do?

As they often say in the airline business, “we know you have a choice” – and, of course, you do! There are many retirement villages in Auckland, each with their own appeal and catering for residents who may have particular interests or backgrounds.

Many of the people who choose to live at Selwyn Heights do so because they find us ‘warm and friendly’, ‘real New Zealanders’, ‘down-to-earth’ and offering ‘a real home away from home’.

We think those are very good reasons to like living here. But we also believe you should have modern apartments and sophisticated facilities such as a café, a bar, a cinema and a spa or Wellness Centre. We don’t believe our village is a ‘resort’ as such, because we don’t believe people would ever really feel at home in a resort. But we do think you should be comfortable, and that you should have fun and access to new and wonderful facilities.

That’s why, before you choose a retirement village, you should get a chance to experience it and get to know the people who make it their home.

We're having another Open Day on 5 November, and you’re very welcome to come along to experience life at Selwyn Heights.  Ring me or John, Vivienne or Mark if you would like to know more.

I hope to see you soon.

Open at last!
Tuesday, 18 October 2011

We’re all tired, but happy, after a very successful Open Day last Saturday. Over 200 people came to visit us, and we made many new friends. In addition, all of our residents turned up and many stayed all day to help with the activities. At 4.00 pm, we fired up the barbeque and all sat down and had a well deserved drink!

I’d like to thank everyone who helped, including the residents, Priscilla, John, Vivienne, Janice and Catherine, and our guests throughout the day.

This Wednesday evening (19th Oct), we're following up with a cocktail evening, to which everyone who joined us on Saturday is welcome. It starts at 7.00 pm and will include 'bubbly' and finger food, live music and tours of the apartments - for those who would like a second look! Everyone who takes a tour will also receive a voucher for a free hand massage in the Wellness Centre, which they can use on a return visit. (If you haven’t already registered for the evening, please phone us on the number below.)

Already, ten of our new Gilberd residents have moved into their new apartments. We would like to welcome them all to Selwyn Heights and will do so more formally on Wednesday night.

For me, the thrilling part of having the new Gilberd and Macdonald Centre open at last is seeing how many people are using it during the day. When the sun is streaming in through the windows and people are coming and going, playing snooker, reading in the library, or sitting in the café enjoying a coffee or meal, it makes life very peaceful and rewarding.

I hope you can join us for a drink on Wednesday from 7.00 pm.

This Saturday is our Open Day!
Monday, 10 Oct 2011

This Saturday (15th) is the day we've been waiting for and working towards for many weeks: our first Open Day. We hope to have many of these in the future, but for now we're just concentrating on Saturday.

I hope you and all your friends and family will come along.

You're welcome to visit at any time during the day, but the key times are 10.00 am and 1.30 pm for the seminars, and 4.00 pm for the barbeque. If you've any questions at all, or are just completely new to the idea of moving into a retirement village, attending the seminars is a must. They'll be run by our very own Mark Trubuhovich, whom many of you already know from the radio interviews he does with Leighton Smith on Newstalk ZB each week. Mark's also an ex-real estate agent of many years' experience, so he can also help with any questions you might have about selling your house - grab him after the seminar and pick his brains!

If you're just keen to have a quick visit, you can drop in at any time and have a look around. There'll always be someone in the Macdonald Centre to greet you, and just ten minutes or quarter of an hour should introduce you to the basics. If you'd like to get more of a feeling for the Village, you're welcome to take a full tour, or stop and chat to our residents – many of whom will be on hand to show you the sort of activities available, now that we have such a wonderful new entertainment centre.

I'd also like to welcome the new residents who've been moving into their new apartments over the last few days. While they'll be understandably busy unpacking, I hope you'll get a chance to meet them at our barbeque at 4.00 pm on Saturday afternoon.

Looking forward to meeting you!

One more week to go!
Friday, 7 Oct 2011

Just over a week to go before our Open Day on Saturday, 15 October. This is the first time that we’ll be able to show everyone through our new Gilberd apartments and Macdonald entertainment centre, so we’re expecting quite a rush!

If you come in the morning, you can join an important seminar that our Sales Advisor, Mark Trubuhovich, is running (only half an hour long), which will help you understand the essential differences between one retirement village and another. This seminar starts at 10.00 am and will be repeated at 1.30 pm.

We’ll also be giving tours of the apartments, entertainment centre and Village, with residents on hand to show you some of the many activities available at Selwyn Heights. You can stop for a bite to eat (lunches available for purchase at our new café) or sit in the sun and get a feel for whether you think Selwyn Heights is the place for you. Make sure you’re around at 4.00 pm for a free barbeque and a chance to meet everyone and have a chat.

Great news, too, about our first Singalong, which we talked about on this blog recently. Over 30 residents enjoyed themselves and have all agreed it should be a regular event! Everyone is also keen to sing hymns in our beautiful Chapel of the Good Shepherd, so we have the makings of a lovely choir as well!

The imminent arrival of our very special 5 foot Wertheim baby grand piano will be an enormous asset to the Village. You’ll be able to hear it played when you visit us next Saturday!

See you then!

Pencil this in your diary
Tuesday, 27 Sept 2011

Over the past six months, I've met many people who have contacted us, either through a friend who knows us, from our advertising, or who were simply passing by.  Each person has asked about coming to live at Selwyn Heights and has been curious to see the new Gilberd apartments and Macdonald entertainment centre that has been going up in front of our offices. And, of course, whilst we're extremely excited to be able to show people around the new development in just two weeks' time, it has been frustrating to have to point past a tall contractor’s fence and show nothing more than this and a few artist’s impressions!

However, on Saturday, 15th October, we will finally be able to throw the doors open to all those people who have been patient and who have trusted us to build something wonderful. You'll be able to walk through the building and see the many new amenities it offers, like the new café, the Wellness Centre, the cinema, library and bar. And you'll be welcome to inspect a few of the apartments and see the different configurations of bedrooms and living areas - perhaps to pick one with a view that suits you!

Our sales advisor, Mark Trubuhovich, will be conducting two short half-hour seminars - at 10.00 am and 1.30 pm - to answer the many questions you’ll have about buying an apartment and living at the Village. And our residents will be there too, as ambassadors of the Village, so you'll be able to ask questions of the people who live here, and find out why they chose Selwyn Heights as their home.

At the end of the day, at about 4.00 pm, we'll be firing up the barbeque and pouring a few drinks and winding down with an al fresco dinner. This is something we very much hope you'll join us for, and bring your friends or family, because it’s important they feel welcome here too. So, make sure you pencil us in on Saturday, 15 October, and please call me if you have any questions about the day.

See you soon

Something to sing about
Monday, 19 Sept 2011

Long before DVDs, and way back even before the advent of the television, people used to entertain themselves by gathering around the piano and singing together. The sing-a-long is probably quite therapeutic, and it’s certainly a way of having a lot of fun and remembering some wonderful old tunes. This Friday, the community of Selwyn Heights is having their very first sing-a-long, prior to the Happy Hour which our residents organise themselves, with volunteers staffing the bar and all the profits going back into the residents’ social committee funds.

When the new Macdonald Centre opens in a couple of weeks' time, the residents will take over the very glamorous new bar, and the social life of Selwyn Heights will move up a notch or three.

With a café, a cinema, a ballroom, an activities room and a library, as well as the bowling green and a hydrotherapy centre, there will be no shortage of places to arrange to meet friends and spend some time together. So it’s nice to see that, along with the activities that Vivienne, John and I are helping to put together, our residents themselves also have a free hand in organising their own events. “You get out of life what you put into it” is our belief, and we have some very talented people here who love getting involved and thinking of fun new things to do.

We have a wonderful entertainment centre at Selwyn Heights, and our community is determined to make the most of it. We’re less than a month away from being able to show it off to all of the people who have expressed interest in living here. Please contact us if you would like to be invited to our Open Day on the 15th of October.

See you soon.

What are we going to enjoy first?
Monday, 12 Sept 2011

Vivienne, John, Mark and I are looking forward to moving into our new offices in the atrium of the new Macdonald Centre. The offices should catch the sun streaming in through the huge glass wall facing the new bowling green; just outside will be big comfy sofas and - a few steps beyond those - our gleaming new café! Who could ask for a better place to spend each day!

We aren’t the only people looking forward to all of the new facilities. Our residents are, too, especially the new Wellness Centre, which offers hairstyling, massages, spa treatments and hydrotherapy - and we’re sure the new 26-seat cinema will be full from the first night! The new ballroom and bar are already the focus of the Residents’ Committee, who are planning to add a number of new activities of their own to those we are putting together! I like to think of everyone waking up each morning and thinking: “Which one of the many choices am I going to enjoy first today?”

Of course, one of the other options is to wake up every morning and just look out of the window! I mention this, because some of the views from the apartments are quite magnificent and I’m sure, if I were living in a new Gilberd apartment, I would get just as much enjoyment looking out the window each day. On the South side, the views look out over Onehunga, the Manukau Harbour and all the way to the Bombay Hills. On the North side, the apartments look down on the bowling green and then up to Monte Cecilia Park. This is where the historic carriageway used to lead, where horses and buggies used to make their way up to the Pah Homestead. A walk up to the new Wallace Art Gallery and café is another thing to add to your list of things to enjoy each day!

Until next time.

Hats off to our new apartment building
Thursday, 1 September 2011

We’re only days away from being able to walk through our new apartment building, Gilberd, and the wonderful new Macdonald Centre entertainment complex, without having to wear hard hats and dayglo waistcoats!

We’re looking forward to taking tours through it soon, and are busy planning a big Open Day for the second week of October. All our residents will be invited, and we’ll end the day with a barbeque on the patio. So stay posted for further announcements, or call us and register, so we can let you know!

One of the things we’re most looking forward to is showing off our new Wellness Centre. The aim of this new centre is to help you feel on top of things and look great. So, it will be a mix of health treatments like massage and hydrotherapy (to soothe muscles and keep them toned and the blood circulating) and beauty treatments like hair styling, make-up and facials.

They’ll all be sensibly priced, so you can treat yourself regularly.

During our Open Day, we hope to have Priscilla, our Wellness Centre manager, giving free hand massages. So it’s a great opportunity to experience this 'first hand'!

Our sales advisor, Mark, has been away on holiday this week, so Joy Crabtree, one of our residents here, kindly stepped in to do our weekly interview with Leighton Smith on Newstalk ZB. Joy and her husband, Bruce, are quite legendary at Selwyn Heights for their yearly biking trips around the world! Joy said some very kind things this week about how much she likes living at Selwyn Heights, which was great!

If anyone would like to have a tour of the Village today, rather than wait a few weeks and get caught up in the rush, contact Vivienne, John or me on the number below.

Look forward to meeting you soon!

Lights, camera, action!
Thursday, 8 Sept 2011

We've been given the go-ahead to move our offices down to the new building, and are only a few weeks' away from opening the doors: first to our new residents (who are really looking forward to getting into their apartments), and then to start hosting tours for all of our friends!

One of the most exciting attractions of the new Macdonald entertainment complex is the new outdoor bowling green. Many of our residents have been playing at the local Hillsborough club and are looking forward to inviting their clubmates over to a game on our new green. It's been specially laid with Tiger turf, so it's of a professional standard. Hopefully, it'll be the venue for many fun tournaments in the future!

We're getting a fantastic response to our new advertising campaign: “You get out of life what you put into it”, featuring Joy and Bruce Crabtree, Julie Clark and Pat Bassett, They were all photographed inside their apartments, so we could showcase not only the interesting lives they lead, but also the lovely places they live in. We hope to continue this campaign and show more of our residents in these splendid portraits. In a couple of weeks, we'll also introduce Nolene Leech, who's moving into her new Gilberd apartment in October.

All of our residents are interesting people and many of them have incredibly busy lives doing good in the community. It's this passion for helping others that we want to celebrate.  In the meantime, if you would like to know more about living at Selwyn Heights, contact Vivienne, John or me on the number below.

It's busy, busy, busy...!

Monday, 22 August 2011

There’s a great deal of excitement here at Selwyn Heights, as we count down the days before we open the new Gilberd apartment building and Macdonald leisure complex.

For our existing residents, it’s exciting because it means a new café, hairdresser, spa and hydrotherapy centre, bowling green, cinema, library, ballroom and bar. For those people who are waiting to move into their brand new apartments in Gilberd, it means the culmination of sometimes many months of planning and then the last minute rush to move out of their old homes and into a sparkling new residence.

So, there’s an atmosphere here of a party about to happen.

Not just one party perhaps, but many...

We have a new member of the team, Catherine, who is working on a range of wonderful entertainment events, which we will add to the many that we have already set in motion. Zumba, for the fitness fanatics; demonstration of Tai Chi, for those who want to exercise a bit more elegantly!; and concerts featuring some of our more famous residents. It’s going to be an exciting time here at Selwyn Heights!

Vivienne, John and I are all looking forward to moving down to the fabulous Macdonald Centre, where our new offices will be situated. It will mean that we will be right in the centre of the Village, so we’ll be much more accessible for both our existing residents and those who are going to be our new friends!

Roll on October!
