Extended respite service at Papakura Selwyn Centre
Date: 23 May 2011
The popular Selwyn Centre at The Homestead in Papakura (21 Youngs Rd) is offering an extended respite service on Monday afternoons.
The Centre currently operates on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings (9.30 am to 12.30 pm), with a programme of social activities, outings, friendship and support for the over 65s. The Monday service caters for guests who are looked after by their spouses or families, and extends from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm, giving extra respite time for carers.
After a cooked lunch, activities include afternoon tea, crafts, gardening, music and games. The programme is adapted to guests’ individual capabilities and transport home is offered, if needed. Fees are $13 for the whole day, including a cooked lunch and transport. The Centre coordinator, volunteers and a registered gerontology nurse are on site throughout the day.
Respite coordinator, Lorraine Standring, says there is a real need for respite services in the Papakura area.
“Those who care for older family members really appreciate a break, knowing their loved ones are well cared for. The Homestead looks forward to extending this service in the future.”
All are welcome to the new Monday sessions, but booking is required in advance. Further information is available from Lorraine Standring by phoning 296 3843.
