Selwyn Foundation retirement villages have a philosophy of ‘continuum of care’. That means: most villages have their own rest home or hospital care as well as independent retirement living.
'Caring hands and caring hearts’ are the cornerstone of Selwyn’s residential beliefs.
Selwyn has an active attitude to wellness. Residents are supported and encouraged to stay as independent as possible for as long as possible. Selwyn asks: what can we do to help support this person and contribute to making the rest of their lives worthwhile?
All residential care residents are encouraged to make their rooms their own, hang pictures and furnish rooms with personal items including televisions. Visitors are welcome.
Different levels of assistance are offered on a long term basis: rest home care, hospital care, dementia day care and secure dementia care. Some Selwyn locations offer all levels of assistance, while others may not (check the Selwyn location nearest you for details of the care offered – see below).
As well as long term residential care, short term and respite care is offered. This can be put in place to support families, perhaps while an older family member is recovering from an operation or the carer needs a rest.
Registered nurses are available at Selwyn villages on a 24 hour seven day week basis.
The Selwyn Foundation has medical practitioners with experience in caring for the elderly, available through each of its residential care sites. Dr Bart Nuysink is General Manager of Medical Services. He is a GP with a specialist interest in Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care. He leads a team devoted to the care and comfort of the elderly.
Qualifying for Government Funding
Prospective residents must be assessed by a government appointed Needs Assessor before they can be admitted to resthomes or hospitals. Residents may be totally or partially funded by the New Zealand Government (this is subject to means testing). For more information on the Government funding available see (www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/indexmh/hop-longtermresidentialcare-stepstotake)
Choices for Your Resthome, Hospital or Dementia Care
At The Selwyn Foundation, we cater to individual choices when our facilities allow. While all Selwyn rest home, hospital and dementia rooms are of high quality, some clients want to pay for "that little bit more comfort".
As a result, in some of our facilities, we are able to offer "premium rooms" - with a differentiated rate charged for the room. (The extra charge for a premium room must be met by individual private payment; it will not be funded by Government or the DHB).
The standard of care our patients receive does not vary - only the standard of accomodation. The Selwyn Foundation remains fully committed to providing top quality care to all our patients.
For a guide on the range of accommodation available, please look at the resthome, hospital or dementia facility of your choice on this website. The different types of room are listed along with photos.
